Software Engineer - Viewer
Toronto
**WHO WE ARE:** Peripheral is developing spatial intelligence, starting in live sports and entertainment. Our models generate spatial data, used for advanced sports analytics and immersive media experiences. We're solving key research challenges in 3D computer vision, creating the foundations for the next generation of robotic perception and embodied intelligence. We're backed by top investors, including Khosla Ventures, Inovia Capital, Deloitte Ventures, Daybreak, and Entrepreneurs First, and working with some of the biggest names in sports. Our team includes engineers and researchers from leading technology companies and research institutions, and we're building technology at the intersection of AI, graphics, and the future of live entertainment. We're ambitious and looking to win. **THE ROLE** We're seeking a Junior Fullstack Software Engineer to help build the viewing experience for Peripheral's platform, the interface people use to explore and interact with the 3D reconstructions and spatial data we capture. You'll join our product/platform team, working on a single rendering engine that runs across web, mobile, and native platforms, adapting how it rasterizes on each (e.g., CUDA, Metal) while keeping the underlying experience consistent. You'll also work on the systems that stream and deliver that data efficiently, and on the UX and design of the viewing experience itself, across web, desktop, and mobile, so it's both fast under the hood and good to use on the surface. **WHO YOU ARE:** You've built things with a game engine before (Unity, Unreal, or your own), and you understand 3D geometry and rendering well enough to reason about how a scene gets from data to pixels on screen. You're excited by the challenge of making that experience work well across very different platforms and constraints, not just getting it working once. You have a sharp eye for detail, and you know that "good enough" means different things in different contexts: the UX of an internal tool doesn't need the same polish as an asset that ships to broadcast, and you can tell the difference without being told. You're good at narrowing down large design spaces quickly, whether that's weighing tradeoffs between compression methods or exploring different looks for data visualization. You can identify the handful of real contenders instead of getting lost in the full space of options. You solve problems independently, digging in and figuring things out rather than waiting to be handed a fully-specified task. You prototype intelligently: you can spin up multiple versions of an idea quickly, evaluate them honestly, and abandon the ones that aren't working rather than getting attached to earlier effort. You're genuinely interested in picking up new skills and jumping into unfamiliar projects, and you're good at it. New tools, new domains, and new codebases don't intimidate you. You use tools like Claude thoughtfully to move faster, not as a substitute for your own judgment. We can prompt Claude ourselves, so we're looking for someone who knows when to lean on it, when to override it, and how to turn its output into something genuinely good rather than passing along whatever it produces. You're excited by the opportunity to shape Peripheral's approach to how people experience captured 3D data, an experience still being defined, with plenty of room to make it your own. **WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:** * Build and maintain the client-side viewing experience for Peripheral's 3D reconstructions, working across web, mobile, and native platforms from a shared rendering engine. * Build and optimize the data streaming pipeline that delivers spatial and video data to the viewer efficiently, including compression and delivery tradeoffs. * Own the UX and visual design of the viewing experience across web, desktop, and mobile, keeping it fast, polished, and consistent across platforms. * Work with 3D geometry and spatial data (point clouds, meshes, camera parameters) to render accurate, performant views of reconstructed scenes. * Prototype multiple approaches to open problems (e.g., a compression method, a visualization style) quickly, and know when to cut one that isn't working. * Collaborate with the Reconstruction team to understand the data formats and outputs you're rendering, and give feedback on what makes data easier to visualize well. * Debug and optimize end-to-end performance, from data delivery through rendering, across all supported platforms. **REQUIREMENTS**: * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). * Prior experience building with a game engine (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine, or a custom/hobby engine). * Strong understanding of 3D geometry (transformations, projections, meshes, cameras) and rendering fundamentals. * Experience with graphics rasterization on at least one platform-specific API or framework (e.g., CUDA, Metal, WebGPU, Vulkan, DirectX). * Experience with data streaming and optimization, e.g., streaming pipelines, compression, or content delivery for large binary data like video or spatial data. * Experience with UX and design for user-facing applications across web, desktop, and mobile. * Experience with mobile development (iOS, Android, or a cross-platform framework). * Comfortable working across the full stack, from rendering and UX to backend streaming systems. * Candidates must have the legal right to work in Canada and be willing to relocate to Toronto for an in-office role. At this time, we are unable to provide immigration sponsorship. **NICE TO HAVE:** * Experience with CUDA, Metal, WebGPU/WebGL, or other rendering frameworks. * Experience with point cloud or mesh rendering/visualization specifically. * Contributions to open-source game engines, renderers, or streaming/media projects. * Experience with cross-platform engine architecture (writing rendering code once, adapting it across backends). * Experience working with designers or other non-technical collaborators, a huge plus. **WHY YOU'LL LOVE WORKING HERE:** * Competitive equity package as an early team member. * Annual salary of $100K--$150K CAD plus performance bonuses, commensurate with experience. * Unparalleled access to premier global sporting events and iconic venues. * Full ownership of high-impact projects shaping the future of spatial intelligence and 3D media. * Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO). * Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and wellness benefits.
